This slide presentation and discussion will trace the development of Northwest Coast Native silver engraving. This art form gained popularity in the late 19th century, as artists began to use coins to create bracelets, rings and other jewelry. After the silver was shaped, the artist would decorate the metal with Northwest Coast designs. Today, this celebrated Native art is a favorite for collectors everywhere.

Brown is the author of Native Visions: Evolution in Northwest Coast Art from the Eighteenth through the Twentieth Century. He is a carver from Sequim, Washington, who has taught at the Totem Heritage Center for two decades. Currently, he is teaching Northwest Coast Silver Engraving I, and History of Northwest Coast Art at the Center.
