Under The Sea (Innovative, appliqued, hand quilted)
Quilt Owner: Susan Doherty Quilt Makers: See Description
Starting with the center,
the quilt owner appliqued a whale and used the vision of traditional
stained glass effect, to show sunlight streaming through the
water. Each border surrounding the middle square was done by
a different person. Fabric was added to or pulled out of the
rotation at each exchange of projects. The artists who worked
on this starting from the first border working out are Dena Conley,
Rachel Stromme, Maggie Freitag, Belinda Chase, Susan Bubbla,
and Phyllis Minicucci. They had anywhere from 2 weeks to a month
to work on each of the borders. In the end, they each had a beautiful
quilt top, and had shared many fun filled hours laughing and
admiring everyone's work. Doherty wrote that the thing that really
amazed her about their project was the diverse outcomes of each
of the quilts. No two looked remotely similar and you would have
never guessed the same individuals had worked on each of them.
Doherty quoted a saying of her father's, "The most fun I
ever had with all my clothes on!" You can see mountains
in the 4th border, birds flying in different directions on the
5th and the sky at the top and waves at the bottom with "flying
geese" in the final border. Doherty wrote she has so many
fond memories every time she looks at it. 68 x 66
