After 27 years of service, Princess Cruises said goodbye in October of 2002 to the old Pacific Princess, the original "Love Boat." Its final voyage was a trans-Atlantic cruise from New York to Rome. The new Pacific Princess arriving for the first time in Ketchikan on June 13th, is a boutique-style ship offering an intimate cruising environment for a total of 670 passengers. According to information provided by Princess Cruises, the ship originally entered service in 1999 as R3 for Renaissance Cruises and began sailing for Princess in April of 2003. The vessel spends its winter season in Australia and the South Pacific with sister company P&O Cruises Australia. The ceremony aboard the new Pacific Princess lasted for approximately one hour.
In recognition of the new Pacific Princess' inaugural call, Captain Christopher Rynd presented Pattie Mackey of the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau a plaque of the Pacific Princess' crest. Mackey accepted the plaque on behalf of the Ketchikan Borough. Rynd, Captain of the Pacific Princess, has been visiting Ketchikan since 1977. ![]() Captain Christopher Rynd presented Jim Voetberg who is the Assistant City Manager a plaque. Voetberg represented the City of Ketchikan. ![]() To honor the new Pacific Princess' inaugural call, the Pacific Princess was presented a painting of Ketchikan by Ketchikan representative Jim Voetberg. The painting was accepted by Captain Rynd. ![]() Len Lawrence and Jim Elkins were among the local guests attending the Inaugural Call and Plaque Exchange Ceremony on Friday.
