Ketchikan, Alaska - Over 150
people attended Ketchikan Indian Community's Membership dinner
on March 16th as the guests of the KIC Tribal Council.
The Sunday afternoon event
started with a "hospitality" hour at 4:00 for KIC members
to visit with one another. The "hospitality" hour also
gave the members an opportunity to informally speak with KIC
Tribal Council members and the KIC Tribal Health Board in a relaxed
and festive atmosphere.
Among the guests were many
honored tribal elders who were seated at the head tables. Two
couples, Willard and Mary Jones, and Julius and Georgie Douglas
were celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversaries.
Susan Pickrell, Vice President
of the K.I.C. Tribal Council, introduced James Horton, KIC's
General Manager. Mr. Horton gave his greeting in Yakama and then
proceeded to tell the gathering about his tribe and background.
He invited all KIC members to stop in his office for a visit
at anytime. Following his remarks, Horton asked tribal elder
Erma Lawrence to give the invocation. Lawrence sang the prayer
in Haida.
KIC President Stephanie Rainwater-Sande
introduced the members of the KIC Tribal Council followed by
Tribal Council member Norman Arriola introduction of the KIC
Tribal Health Board.
A turkey dinner with all the
trimmings dinner followed the introductions. The dinner was prepared
by members of ANB and ANS Camp 14. Throughout the dinner door
prizes were given away. Table decorations were designed by Ce
Ce Johnson of ANS Camp 14.
President Rainwater-Sande said
she hopes to continue to have special events such as the dinner
for KIC members as a way to honor the elders and as a way to
better foster communication between the membership and the Tribal
Council.
