October is recognized in communities across the nation as National Arts and Humanities Month. Ketchikan General Hospital (KGH) celebrates the arts by honoring the efforts of a new group of young artists.

A children's art wall - with a whimsical permanent backdrop created by local artist Dave Rubin for the hospital's new wing in 2000 - houses rotating exhibits of local children's work. Works displayed have come both from area classrooms and from KGH pediatric patients.

This month a new exhibit has been hung from works created in ArtsCool, the summer art camp sponsored by the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council (KAAHC).

Twelve students have individual works exhibited. They are Peter Stanton, Kayla Henderson, Elizabeth Cleman, Nathan Buendia, Joe Truitt, Inga Christensen, Alexa Zelensky, Erin Doherty, Malia Martinez, Rique Hill, Isabel Stephens, and Kelsey West. Two group projects are included as well. The works include poetry, watercolor, sumi, and eraser prints.

According to Patch Adams, M.D., an art-loving physician made famous by the film bearing his name, "Deep down, everyone knows the value to their health of music, art, poetry, clowning, and dance. I hope that those who consider using art in any of its many magical forms in their healing work will open themselves to the infinite number of ways in which it can be done. Invite artists to pass through the front doors of every health care facility to do their work of healing."

The children's art wall is an ongoing work in progress of KAAHC with special assistance from volunteer Sue Doherty, and the KGH Art for Healing Committee.
