The Big Brothers Big Sisters is a new program for Ketchikan and is funded through the Department of Education. According to Klein, the Southeast Alaska Big Brothers Big Sisters is excited about the establishment of this program in Ketchikan. Currently, there are also Southeast Alaska programs in Sitka, Juneau, and Hoonah. The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ketchikan program will be having an open house is the near future at their new plaza location. Watch for future announcements. As a reminder, the Ketchikan Big Brothers Big Sisters program says that "each of us was touched by someone - other than our parents - who broadened our horizons and brought a little magic into our lives. By becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, you can do the same for a child. And you will both be forever changed by the experience." The local community-based program is currently under development. This program will match mentors and "littles" together. Once matched, together they will take part in a variety of activities in the community. A school-based program is also planned and would allow mentors to meet their matched "littles" at school and help them with school work or just spend time together at lunch for activities. Klein said the group looks forward to hearing from community members and participation could take as little as an hour a week. In addition to offering a rewarding experience for adults, the program is about bringing a little magic into the life of a young person and children and youth are encourage to sign up to be Little Brothers Little Sisters.
