The Ketchikan Merchants Baseball Club will travel and play against teams from other areas. According to information provided by Team Manager and Head Coach Fred Bass, these young men are picked because of their behavior and their skill at playing baseball and because of their desire to play at a higher level. Bass remarked, "By traveling down south we can play on different fields and play different teams every day thus gaining experience to improve our game." The team left Ketchikan on Saturday, June 14, 2003 for Seattle to play numerous games in the Washington State area. The first game the Ketchikan Merchants Baseball Club played was on Monday evening in Shorewood, Washington. The Merchants defeated the Mallminators of Shorewood HS. The score was 2 to 1. According to information provided Bass, the Merchants scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday evening to defeat the Shorewood Mallminators. Mat Way pitched a great game allowing 6 hits and no earned runs through the game. Ketchikan's bats were not exactly on fire but managed to get the job done. Good defense by the infield and a great throw by right fielder Charles Altman cut down a run at the plate preserving the win. The Merchants next game will be Wednesday in Edmonds, Washington. The Merchants will play the Edmonds Rebels. "We would like thank our sponsors for their donations as we couldn't travel without their help," Bass said.
