Three Apply For Alaska Education Commissioner Job

Three educators have applied for the position of Commissioner of Education & Early Development, Acting Education & Early Development Commissioner Karen J. Rehfeld announced Wednesday. The deadline for submitting applications was April 18.

The state board is authorized by statute to appoint a commissioner. Also by statute, the governor must approve the board's appointment.

The three applicants are:

Betty Conklin, a long time principal, administrator and elementary teacher from Indianapolis, Indiana. Since 1990, she has been principal of William A. Bell School in Indianapolis. She began her career as a teacher in 1970. She earned a bachelors degree in 1970 from Franklin College, and a masters degree from the University of Indianapolis in 1976. She attended the Butler University Experiential Program for Preparing School Principals from 1996 to 1998.

H. Fred Pomeroy, a long-time New Mexico and Alaska school superintendent. Pomeroy was superintendent of Kenai Peninsula Borough School District from 1979 to 1989. Between 1989 and 1998, he was superintendent of Los Lunas Schools, Roswell Independent School District and Tucumcari Municipal School District. From 1998 to 2001, Pomeroy was executive director of New Mexico Coalition of School Administrators. He earned a bachelors degree in 1961 from Taylor University; a masters in educational administration in 1964 from the University of New Mexico; and a Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of New Mexico with a major in education administration and a minor in business administration. Prior to coming to Alaska in 1979, Pomeroy had been superintendent of Roswell, Silver City and Las Vegas school districts in New Mexico. He was named Alaska Superintendent of the Year and is a past president of the Alaska Association of School Administrators and the New Mexico School Administrators Association.

Roger Sampson, a long time Alaska educator who served as superintendent of the nationally recognized Chugach School District from 1994-2000; a school principal from 1984 to 1994 for Kenai Peninsula Borough School District; and from 1979-1984 a principal, special education director and federal programs director for Annette Island School District in Metlakatla. He earned a masters degree in education administration in 1976. He was named National Rural Superintendent of the Year in 1997, Alaska Principal of the Year in 1987, and was appointed to a key committee that began Alaska's 12-year movement to standards based education under the administration of Governor Hickel.

According to the state board's process, the board will screen applications and select finalists during a teleconference on April 29th, and interview finalists on May 9th in Juneau.
