Ketchikan, AK - Kathy Stack, who lives on Roosevelt Drive south of Ketchikan, said she would like to caution people to protect their dogs after having two of her dogs attacked by a wolf - one dog was attacked on Sunday and another attacked on Monday.

Over the past month, Stack said she and her husband had previously seen a lone wolf a couple of times in the area and both times either she or her husband Lyle were with their

dogs. However, Stack said Bingo, their Border Collie, was only fifteen feet from her when attacked Sunday by a wolf and on Monday their 50 pound Lab puppy was attacked by a wolf after walking behind the dog pen. Lyle Stack heard the pup screaming in pain and he ran into the woods and found a wolf holding the pup in his mouth by the shoulder and the pup's inner thigh. In saving the pup, Lyle Stack hit the wolf in the head with a tape measure freeing the young dog. Kathy Stack said it appears the pup will be fine and is now on antibiotics - the bite was small.

It's unknown if the dogs were attacked by the same wolf or two different wolves.

She said she spoke to the Fish and Game biologist last month after reading about wolves attacking dogs and after spotting a wolf around their dog pen around 1:30 one morning. Stack said the biologist told her that this pack is very aggressive and getting dogs with their owners near by. "Boy was he right," Stack said.

Kathy Stack said they just put up a new pen for the dogs to play in; however, she said for now all their dogs are in the house.

She said she's told a few people in the Roosevelt Drive area about the attacks. Stack said she is concerned about dogs that are tied up all day in the area. She said she is sharing her story in order to caution people to protect their dogs as she believes this is a very dangerous pack and that the wolves have no fear of coming right up to a home.
