"Discover Ketchikan" consists of five two and half hour workshops in various topics including "Welcome to Ketchikan" the basic facts about Ketchikan and the surrounding area; "Why We Call Ketchikan Home" - things to do including recreation and visitor attractions; "People and History of Ketchikan" includes both native and non-native settlement of the area; "Flora, Fauna and Furry Friends" - plants and animals common to the area; and finally "Ketchikan Arts and Architecture" historical architecture and current art and art happenings. Each workshop features three or four knowledgeable speakers in the area covered. Each workshop is $20 or $89 for all five. Workshops can be taken individually or as a whole series. The goal of the series is to provide interesting and accurate information to employees who are on the front lines of the visitor industry as well as to anyone who has an interest in the community and its past. Retail clerks, tour guides, bus drivers, and anyone who works in the visitor industry in the summer will be able to answer most any question about Ketchikan a tourist puts to them this year. Continuing education credit is also available for these workshops. The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan Campus provides educational courses, vocational and technical programs to Ketchikan and surrounding communities. Courses are available locally and through distance avenues including web-based, audio-conference, and satellite. Through these offerings, students can achieve certifications, associate, bachelor and master degrees. UAS Ketchikan is open to anyone interested in embarking on a career path. For more information, contact the university.
