For those people who know they are interested in working outdoors and with the environment, UAS Ketchikan is holding a Natural Resources Career Exploration workshop to provide critical information from experts and professionals in the field about career possibilities in the fisheries and forestry management fields.

Not only will participants find out the kinds of jobs available in natural resources, but also the necessary educational background and financial aid available for school to start the career of their choice.

The workshop begins at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 2 in the Paul Building on the main campus of UAS. While the schedule is subject to change, Wednesday events include hearing from professionals about careers for fisheries technicians in both private and government agencies, a tour of the Ketchikan Indian Corporation Deer Mountain Fish Hatchery as well as the outlook for the future of fisheries in Southeast Alaska.

Thursday, April 3 begins at 9:00 am with career information on forestry technicians. The day continues with a tour of the United States Forest Service thinning site, camp grounds, trails and fisheries area. The future of the forestry industry will be discussed at length by a panel of experts over lunch followed by a tour of the Wood Technology Center and then the Pacific Logging Company on Gravina Island. The day ends with information on educational and training requirements for all the careers discussed during the workshop. Information on programs and financial aid will also be provided.

Grants are available for travel and lodging for participants outside Ketchikan. The deadline to apply for these grants is March 10.
