Roppel of Ketchikan Among Outstanding Educators Selected To Participate February 18 , 2003
The forum attracts teachers who have earned state recognition for outstanding teaching and leadership through the state Teacher of the Year, Milken Outstanding Educator Award and other recognition programs. This year, legislators, state education department officials, postsecondary educators, education organization leaders and others are expected to attend and interact with the teacher-leaders. Among the statewide educators selected to participate in the Alaska Teacher Forum 2003 is Rosie Roppel of Ketchikan. Roppel's selection was based on her commitment to education, to leadership, and to students. She has taught English for 25 years: six years in Idaho and nineteen in Ketchikan. Roppel has taught at Schoenbar Middle School and currently teaches at Ketchikan High School. According to Truman and Montoya, the forum provides participants the opportunity to celebrate teaching, identify leadership roles beyond the classroom, proactively speak out on education-related issues and to interact with policy makers. Participants will analyze and develop solutions to critical issues in Alaska education, focusing on teacher retention and implementation of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
